Alloy Analysis: 6061 vs. 5052 Aluminum

Not all aluminum is created equal. Why you bend 5052 and machine 6061.

Alloy Analysis: 6061 vs. 5052 Aluminum

You order “Aluminum” online. It arrives. You try to bend it, and it cracks. Why? You bought 6061-T6.

6061-T6: The Structural King

  • Properties: Heat treated (T6) for high strength and rigidity.
  • Use it for: Drivetrain rails, thick plates, machined blocks.
  • Machining: “Chips” beautifully on a CNC.
  • Bending: DO NOT BEND. It will crack and snap because it is brittle.

5052-H32: The Sheet Metal Queen

  • Properties: Softer, more ductile.
  • Use it for: Bent brackets, intake ramps, electronics covers.
  • Machining: “Gummy”. It melts and clogs endmills. Hard to CNC.
  • Bending: Bends like a dream. You can fold it 90 degrees without cracking.

Conclusion

  • CNC Router: Buy 6061.
  • Brake Press / Hand Bending: Buy 5052. Check the label before you buy.
