Do Robots Have Brains? (The CPU)

Where does the robot think? Inside the 'Brick'. It's a tiny computer that acts just like your brain, but faster (and dumber).

Do Robots Have Brains? (The CPU)

You have a brain inside your skull. A LEGO robot has a brain inside the Hub (or Brick). It looks like a plastic box with buttons, but inside is a Computer Chip (CPU).

The Micro-City

If you zoomed in on that chip, it looks like a city.

  • Highways: Tiny gold wires that carry information.
  • Factories: Transistors that do math.
  • Warehouses: Memory (RAM) to store numbers.

Faster, But Dumber

Your brain is amazing. You can dream, invent stories, and recognize your grandma’s face. A robot brain is:

  • Dumb: It can only do math (1+1=2). It can’t dream.
  • Fast: It can do math millions of times a second.

If you give a robot a math test, it wins instantly. If you ask a robot to write a funny poem, it fails. That’s why Humans and Robots make a great team. You have the Creativity; the robot has the Speed. Together, you can solve any puzzle in FIRST LEGO League!
