Drivetrain Deep Dive: Tank & 6-Wheel Drive
The tank. The bulldozer. When raw pushing power and traction matter more than fancy strafing.
Drivetrain Deep Dive: Tank & 6-Wheel Drive
In an era of Swerve and Mecanum, isn’t Tank Drive obsolete? No. In fact, a well-built Tank Drive is the scariest thing on the field for a Mecanum bot.
The Design
- Motors: 4 (or even 6 for massive torque).
- Wheels: 6 or 8 traction wheels (Colson or rubber).
- Drop Center: The middle wheels are slightly lower to allow for turning (otherwise scrubbing prevents turning).
The Physics of Dominance
Tank drive cannot strafe. It can only move forward/backward and turn. So why use it? Friction. High-traction rubber wheels = incredible pushing power.
- Defense: You can pin an opponent. You can shove them out of the way. You can hold your ground in the Loading Zone.
- Speed: Tank drives are often faster in a straight line than Mecanum.
The DECODE Use Case
DECODE involves “The Source” (loading zone) and “The Cipher” (scoring zone).
- If you can park in front of the opponent’s Cipher and create a wall, they cannot score.
- Mecanum bots cannot move you.
- Swerve bots might move you, but it’s a fight.
Verdict
If you are building a dedicated Defense Bot or a specialized fast-cycler that doesn’t need to strafe to align, Tank Drive is a valid, “Counter-Meta” strategy.
