Grant Writing: Winning Non-Technical Awards

Free money exists. How to write narratives for the Gene Haas and Simpson Strong-Tie grants.

Grant Writing: Winning Non-Technical Awards

Grants are different from sponsors. Sponsors want marketing. Gifts want Impact.

Keywords that Win

When writing for Gene Haas or NASA grants, use these words:

  • “Underrepresented communities”
  • “Sustainability”
  • “Pipeline”
  • “Skill-building” (CNC, Machining, CAD)

The Narrative

Don’t say: “We need money for motors.” Say: “This grant will allow 10 students to learn CNC machining, preparing them for careers in American manufacturing.”

The “Thank You”

If you win, send a Thank You letter. Ideally, send a picture of the team holding the check. This ensures you win next year too.
