How 5G Works: Is It Faster Than Your Robot?

Everyone talks about 5G speed. But how does it work? High frequencies, short wavelengths, and why your robot uses the same physics (Wi-Fi 6).

How 5G Works: Is It Faster Than Your Robot?

You see “5G” on your phone. It downloads a movie in 5 seconds. Is it magic? No, it’s just Physics.

The Frequency Spectrum

Radio waves travel at the speed of light. They only differ in Frequency (How fast they wiggle).

  • AM Radio: ~1 MHz (Slow wiggle. Travels miles. Low data).
  • 4G / Wi-Fi: ~2.4 GHz (Fast wiggle. Travels rooms. Good data).
  • 5G (mmWave): ~30-60 GHz (Insanely fast wiggle).

The Trade-off

Rule: Higher Frequency = More Data, but Less Range.

  • 5G waves are so tiny (millimeters) that they can be blocked by a Tree Leaf or Your Hand.
  • This is why 5G towers have to be on every street corner.

Robotics: The Wi-Fi War

In FTC Robotics, we use Wi-Fi Direct (usually 2.4GHz or 5GHz).

  • When 50 robots turn on in one gym, the air gets crowded with radio waves.
  • The waves crash into each other (Interference).
  • Your robot disconnects. “Packet Loss.” We scan the channels (Channel 1, 6, 11) to find a quiet “lane” on the highway, just like your phone switches towers to find the best 5G signal.
