How Do I Start? (Join FIRST LEGO League)
You love robots. You love LEGO. It's time to join a team. A guide for curious kids and parents on starting their robotics journey.
How Do I Start? (Join FIRST LEGO League)
You’ve read about robots. You’ve built Legos. Now you want to compete. The coolest sport in the world isn’t baseball or soccer. It’s FIRST LEGO League (FLL).
What is FLL?
It is a global competition for kids grades 4-8.
- The Robot Game: You build an autonomous LEGO robot to solve missions on a mat (pushing, lifting, pulling).
- The Innovation Project: You invent a solution to a real-world problem (like “How to save energy”).
- Core Values: You learn Teamwork, Fun, and Discovery.
How to Join
- Find a Team: Ask your school science teacher or check the FIRST website to see if there is a club nearby.
- Start a Team: Grab 2 or 3 friends and a parent (Coach). You can start a team in your garage!
- Get the Kit: Buy the LEGO Education SPIKE Prime set. It has motors, sensors, and the Brain.
The Path to Glory
FLL is just step one.
- Ages 6-10: FLL Explore.
- Ages 9-14: FLL Challenge (The big game).
- Ages 12-18: FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) - Metal robots, real code, intense action.
You are the future engineer. The world needs your ideas. Grab some bricks and start building!
