Intake Mechanics: Compliant Wheels
Precision over chaos. Using compliant wheels for a 'Touch It, Own It' intake style.
Intake Mechanics: Compliant Wheels
Surgical tubing is chaotic. Compliant Wheels are precise. These are the green/gray squishy wheels you see on elite robots.
Concept
A row of rubber wheels that compress against the game piece to pull it in.
- Grip: Massive friction.
- Control: Once the wheels grab the object, it goes exactly where you want it. It doesn’t bounce around.
The “Touch It, Own It” Theory
Elite teams subscribe to “Touch It, Own It.” If your intake touches a pixel/artifact, it should be yours instantly. Compliant wheels provide constant, positive pressure on the object, sucking it in reliably.
The Geometry Challenge
Unlike surgical tubing, you cannot just slap wheels on a shaft and hope. Geometry Matters.
- You must calculate the exact compression distance (usually 0.5 - 1 inch of squish).
- If the gap is too wide, it won’t grab.
- If the gap is too narrow, it will jam.
Verdict
- Tubing: Forgive sloppy driving.
- Wheels: Reward precision driving with faster, cleaner cycles.
