Material Guide: ABS & ASA

Heat resistance and durability. Why ABS is the classic engineering plastic but hard to print.

Material Guide: ABS & ASA

ABS is what LEGO bricks are made of. It is durable, impact-resistant, and heat-resistant. So why doesn’t everyone use it?

The Printing Nightmare

ABS shrinks when it cools.

  • Warping: The corners of your print will lift off the bed.
  • Splitting: Layers will crack apart.
  • Fumes: It releases styrene gas (bad for you).

You NEED an enclosed printer to print ABS.

ASA: The Modern Alternative

ASA is basically “ABS 2.0”.

  • UV Resistant (great for outdoor use, less relevant for FTC).
  • Less warping.
  • Same strength.

When to use it

  • Motor Mounts: It won’t melt.
  • Structural Parts: It has a tiny bit of flex before breaking, making it tough.

Verdict

If you have an enclosed printer (Bambu X1C, Voron), use ASA. If not, avoid it.
