Outreach Impact: Quality vs. Quantity
Does your outreach matter? Why judges prefer 50 hours of deep mentorship over 500 hours of passive demos.
Outreach Impact: Quality vs. Quantity
“We did 1000 hours of outreach!” Judge: “Wow. What did you do?” “We stood at a booth at the county fair.” Judge: “Oh.”
The “Passive” Outreach (Low Value)
- Booths, Fairs, Parades.
- Good for: Recruiting, Awareness.
- Bad for: Connect Award. It has shallow impact.
The “Deep” Outreach (High Value)
- Mentoring: Spending 2 hours/week with an FLL team for 6 months.
- Curriculum: Teaching a Java class at the library.
- Legislative: Talking to school boards about STEM funding.
Measuring Impact
Don’t count hours. Count Results.
- “We taught 20 kids.” -> “3 of them started their own FTC team.” That is impact.
