USB-C vs. Lightning: The One Cable to Rule Them All

Why did Apple switch to USB-C? It's not just a shape. It's a protocol that can carry Data, Power, and Video at the same time.

USB-C vs. Lightning: The One Cable to Rule Them All

For years, we had a drawer full of cables. Micro-USB. Mini-USB. Lightning. FireWire. Now, almost everything is USB-C. It is reversible (yay!), but its power lies inside the pins.

24 Pins of Power

Old USB had 4 pins: Power (+), Ground (-), Data (+), Data (-). USB-C has 24 Pins.

  • Power Delivery (PD): Can carry 100 Watts (enough to charge a laptop).
  • DisplayPort: Can carry 4K video.
  • Thunderbolt: Can carry 40 Gbps of data (External GPUs).

The Robot Connection

In FIRST Tech Challenge, we use USB-C to connect the Driver Station phone to the Gamepad.

  • The Problem: USB-C ports are fragile. If you yank the cable, you break the motherboard.
  • The Fix: We use “Strain Relief” (3D printed clips) to hold the cable head steady. Because if that cable disconnects for 1 millisecond during a match, your robot freezes for 10 seconds. A good cable is the difference between Winning and Disconnecting.
