What Is Inside a Robot's Brain?

Uncover the mystery of the Microcontroller, the super-fast brain that makes robots move.

What Is Inside a Robot’s Brain?

A robot’s brain looks nothing like a human brain. It doesn’t have squishy gray matter. Instead, it’s a small flat square made of silicon, called a Microcontroller or computer chip!

This brain is covered in tiny electrical pathways. When a programmer types code on a laptop, they send those instructions into the robot’s brain. The brain listens to those rules. If the code says, ‘When the camera sees red, drive forward,’ the brain will send a zap of electricity to the motors every time it sees the color red.

You can program your very own robot brains starting in elementary school with FIRST® LEGO League!
