Why is My LEGO Tower Wobbly? (Triangles!)
You built a tall tower, but it keeps falling over. Why? Learn the engineer's secret shape: The Triangle.
Why is My LEGO Tower Wobbly? (Triangles!)
You stack LEGO bricks straight up. 10 bricks… 20 bricks… CRASH. Why did it fall? Because Squares are Wobbly.
The Square Problem
Imagine a square made of sticks. If you push the corner, it squishes into a diamond shape. It isn’t strong. Most LEGO towers are just stacks of squares. They have “weak ankles.”
The Triangle Solution
Now imagine a Triangle. If you push on the top of a pyramid, does it squish? No. Triangles are the strongest shape in the universe.
- The Cross-Brace: If you take your wobbly square toggle and put a diagonal stick across it (corner to corner), you have turned it into two triangles.
- Now, it cannot wobble!
Building Better FLL Robots
In FIRST LEGO League, your robot needs to be tough. It will bump into walls and missions.
- Don’t just use pins to connect two beams.
- Add a diagonal “Cross-Brace” beam.
- Build triangles, not squares. Your robot will be solid as a rock!
