Shooter Design: The Adjustable Hood
Unlock the entire field. How an adjustable hood allows you to score from anywhere and avoid defense.
Shooter Design: The Adjustable Hood
The Adjustable Hood is the mark of an elite shooter. By using a servo to change the angle of the exit hood, you gain control over the Trajectory Arc.
Concept
- Mechanics: A servo pushes a linkage or gear to tilt the hood up/down.
- Variable 1 (Angle): Controls the arc (High lob vs Flat laser).
- Variable 2 (RPM): Controls distance.
The Strategic Advantage
- Zone Independence: You can shoot from the wall. You can shoot from the middle. You can shoot from the loading zone.
- Defense Evasion: If a defender creates a wall, you can angle your hood UP to shoot over them (the “Lob Shot”).
The Complexity Cost
- Software: You need a lookup table (Distance -> Hood Angle).
- Hardware: It adds weight to the top of your robot (raising center of gravity).
- Reliability: If the servo breaks or the linkage jams, your shooter is dead.
Verdict: Essential for World Class teams who need to shoot under heavy defense.
