Shooter Design: The Fixed Hood
Simplicity is king. Why a fixed hood shooter might be the most reliable choice for DECODE's high-goal targets.
Shooter Design: The Fixed Hood
The simplest design is often the best. A Fixed Hood Shooter has one moving part: the flywheel. There is nothing to break. There is nothing to calibrate mid-match.
Concept
- Geometry: The exit angle is permanently set (usually around 45-60 degrees for DECODE).
- Variable: The only variable you control is Motor Speed (RPM).
- Pros: Rock solid consistency. The ball leaves the same way every time.
- Cons: Limited range. You have to shoot from specific positions (e.g., against the wall or at the Launch Line) to score reliably.
Why it Wins Matches
In DECODE, cycle time is everything. If your driver has to stop, adjust a servo, wait for a hood to actuate, and then shoot, you are wasting 3 seconds per cycle. With a Fixed Hood, you drive to your “Sweet Spot” and fire instantly.
Building Tips
- Compression: You need consistent compression on the game piece (usually 0.5 inches).
- Backspin: Ensure your hood has a high-friction liner (foam or rubber) to induce backspin for a stable flight trajectory.
Verdict: The best choice for Rookie and Intermediate teams.
